The Nephilim idea has been done a few times, but I like this one starting out large rather than a medium creature with Powerful Build. It's flavorful enough that the 5 RHD don't feel too burdensome, but not so much that it becomes a no-brainer for any Strength-based melee build.

Level Adjustment?

Why does this thing have an LA of 0 yet an ECL of 5? It seems so incredibly powerful... I am not sure if this would fit well in it's current state, if, for example, someone were to play it in with a party of Level-5 adventurers ... it would not be able to take any class levels until everyone else reached level 10, am I right? geezus!!! --ProphetPX 01:09, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Racial Hit Dice. Basically it has 5 levels in "Golden One" before it even begins gaining any class levels, so the minimum level it can be played is 5th. It can take its first class level at 6th. You can think of them being a Golden One 5/Fighter 1, for example. -- Eiji-kun 01:13, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

I can field a bit of further explanation. Eiji designed this race to be playable out-of-the-box as a fifth level character (just pick your skills and feats, really). They level as any normal 5th level character would, since they have 5 levels (in racial levels as racial hit dice). The purpose of this is to avoid the pitfalls of Level Adjustment, which are many. Primarily among them is the weird problems associated with not having actual levels and being with other characters. Things like Skills (max ranks in particular), Hit Points, Base Attack Bonus, Saves... well everything associated with actual level gain all suffer. Rather than worry about these fake levels (what Level Adjustment is), the race just has levels in it's creature type, and the design of the race is based around that. --Ganteka Future 03:42, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Additional thing for clarity - according to the SRD:Race Descriptions, the total ECL of a race is equal to its racial hit dice + its level adjustment. So you can totally make powerful races with an ECL of 5 and no LA, it just means that they don't get to be played until everyone is level 5+ and are going to be potentially bad at certain classes for their level. You probably wouldn't want to start in at 6th level as a 1st level Cleric on top of your 5 racial hit dice, for example, though I'm sure there are specific cases where it would be fine. - Tarkisflux Talk 04:07, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
