| I never really understood the need for templates that were "here are some higher numbers to make your monster more competitive", when you can just give a monster racial HD or class levels. This also isn't just intended for monsters though. This is available to PCs. So, is an ECL 6, 1 HD Patriarch a playable character? No, it is not. Is a Patriarch ever really suitable for a PC? With the way it skews numbers against an offset of having HD that grant fun things with at least some balance, no, a patriarch is a waste for players who should be getting fun abilities to use and things to do. For monsters, you might be able to pull this off on something with around 6-9 starting CR and be okay if you make it a boss creature. But as a boss NPC, stick with levels in something and use feats (and bonus feats) for that power gain. |
