Looks like bonus action dodge at first glance, but it might just be worse enough to be acceptable.

Really strong as a bonus action. Compare to one of the best cantrips in the game, Vicious Mockery.
RatedDislike.png Rlyehable dislikes this article and rated it 1 of 4.
Too powerful for a bonus action cantrip. If it were an action or 1st level, it would be more balanced.

It was originally going to be an action, but my brother pointed out that it was too weak. --Luigifan18 (talk) 21:07, 21 December 2017 (MST)

This sits in a really tricky place. On the one hand, spending an action to give attackers you can see disadvantage is just the Dodge action. Trouble is, bonus action spells are rare and cantrips are particularly cheap to access. All said, I'm hesitantly okay with this spell. It's got some effective limitations that keep it somewhat in check:

  • You have to pick the target; if there are multiple combatants anyone you didn't select can hit you first and potentially disrupt the spell.
  • Concentration means not only can the spell be disrupted, but it conflicts with other concentration spells (a big cost for legit casters)
  • As a bonus action spell it limits your spellcasting that turn to Cantrips (another big restriction for casters).
  • It only effects the first attack, significantly worse than the dodge action (also doesn't help dex saves).

I'd like to see two things to really sell me on this spell; a more conspicuous spell effect to better justify smart enemy tactics (glowing eyes tracking the target, etc), and some other minor inconvenience for non-casters (offer the target an Intelligence saving throw, add some other usage restriction, etc).Vaegrim (talk) 00:00, 17 April 2019 (MDT)
