Sprites are expressions of the basic elements that comprise the universe. They are small, self-contained and amorphous creatures with a very faint consciousness, and are often mistaken for ordinary elementals, but they differ from those in that sprites exist solely upon the material plane. In reality, a sprite is a microscopic gap within the spatial fabric connecting the material plane with one or more Inner Planes — usually those relating to elemental forces or energies — and are known to be formed in certain high energy events. They derive their consciousness from the nature inherent to their respective elements and are stable in normal conditions, though the strength with which sprites 'bleed' into the material depends on their physical presence. If their core is weakened sufficiently, either over time or by external factors, a sprite's aperture can seal itself, resulting in its 'death', but a sprite is generally resilient
Certain rare events can force the aperture of an elemental sprite so wide that the bleed-in from the elemental plane becomes hazardous or catastrophic. This is one of the ways in which a primeval can come into being.
