Minimum Skill Points
Characters need skills so that they can perform their class role and players need their characters to have skills so they can actively participate in what's going on.
The Rule
PCs get a minimum of 4 skill points per level, regardless of class or Intelligence modifier.
Modifications
- Increase the minimum amount for higher balance ranges of play.
- Grant free full ranks in a "flavor skill" which is intended for background/hobby use and is unlikely to come up in actual gameplay. Things like Appraise for most everyone, Craft for mostly non-combat related things, Perform for non-bards, and, of course, Profession, which was practically designed for this purpose.
- Free ranks in an essential class skill or skills. Let the fighters make their own gear or barbarians and rangers find their way in the woods.
