This small brown-gray imp-like figure has tattered broken wings, a hunched back covered in scars, and a long whip-like tail covered in small barbs.

Strange outsiders which hail from no particular plane at all, they are believed to be formed from would-be quasits and imps which did not shed their sense of regret, and instead of evolving into a being of pure evil instead formed a shape of pure regret and sorrow. These pitiful creatures flee their hellish homelands and follow a path of the mortification of the flesh, in hopes that they would one day be enlightened. For after all if they were to give up and fail on their journey, they would surely devolve back into a quasit or imp.

In spite of their wings clearly being damaged, they continue to fly through supernatural means. Their scarred and often deformed bodies have endured so much self-torment that they prove to be abnormally tough.

Mortifiels speak Abyssal, Celestial, Common, and Infernal. They are about 2 feet tall and weigh 8 pounds.

Combat

Mortifiels do not fear combat, but with death comes the threat of respawning in the lower planes if they prove themselves unworthy. It is their hope that they instead respawn in the adopted planes they call home, so that they may return in a year and a day. As such mortifiels do not seek combat, and often avoid it, but are never fearful of it.

Attach (Ex): The mortifiel is capable of attaching their long tail to a willing or helpless creature as a standard action dealing 1d4 damage which cannot be healed while it remains attached. This keeps the mortifiel always tethered within 5 ft, allowing itself to be dragged around by any larger creature. While attached, the mortifiel can choose to take on the suffering of any disease, poison, pain effects, sickening, or nausea for its host, which lasts the usual duration. It also transfers up to 5 points of damage per attack to itself, though this damage bypasses their universal damage resistance. It cannot transfer an effect if it is already suffering from the effect (that is, the host is still poisoned if its mortifiel is also poisoned at the time).

In addition, while attached to a mortifiel the host does not age. Instead, the mortifiel ages at ten times the usual speed, decaying to death in a scant 4 years. It is believed by the mortifiel that by taking on the suffering of others, they will hasten their own ascension.

Ravages of Time (Ex): The mortifiel is unlike any other outsider in the fact they are mortal and age. In fact, they reach middle age after 10 years, old age after 20 years, and venerable age after 30 years. At the end of the 40 years old they die of old age, and either pass on into an ascended new form or are reborn after 30 days in a new young body. Thus while they do not truly die of old age, they do suffer from aging penalties and benefits when in the appropriate age category.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp):

Tail of Punishment (Ex): The barbed tail is actually capable of producing more pain than serious wounds. It may deal nonlethal damage at no penalty to attack rolls. It is also capable of breaching the mortifiel's own damage resistance ability.

Universal Damage Resistance (Ex): The mortifiel reduces the damage from all sources by 5, regardless if it is physical or energy damage.

Familiar

Mortifiels can be used as familiars with the Improved Familiar feat and at least caster level 9th. The attach ability of the mortifiel is a boon for the survival of its master.
