“ | If my life as guildmaster has taught me one thing, it's that there is nothing more death prone than a rookie adventurer. They are headstrong and rarely listen to their elders. They die to the weakest of creatures and fall to the simplest of traps. I've read records of one of them being killed by a mouldy sock once. But having one's head eaten by a carnivorous pillow? That's a new one... | ” |
—Jaime Heathwald, Guild master of the Easton Adventurer's Guild |
Believed to be a distant offshoot of the mimic family, this odd creature likes to hide in dungeons to prey on gullible adventurers. Despite its Ooze-like features, it is actually intelligent, and uses this unexpected tendency and its ability to mimic shapes and textures in order to trick its targets into thinking that it's an ordinary, if highly ornate and comfortable pillow. If successfully tricked, the prey will fall asleep on it and it will use this opportunity to induce numbness as it devours the head and brain - its favourite food. For this unique hunting method the creature has earned its name of the Devouring Pillow.
Combat
A devouring pillow has no direct combat ability. As such, it must depend on subterfuge in order to subdue and devour its prey. Its main method of attack is to wait until its target becomes unconscious before engulfing the head, releasing numbing agents to prevent awakening, and leisurely devouring the brain.
Latch On (Ex): If a creature starts its turn pinned, paralyzed, unconscious or otherwise rendered helpless, a devouring pillow may latch onto the creature's head as a standard action. When latched on, the devouring pillow automatically deals 2d6 points of acid damage at the start of each turn until the creature dies or it is somehow removed. Upon successfully latching on, the creature must make a DC 14 Fortitude save or become numbed. An unconscious creature that succeeds on this save wakes up and becomes capable of defending itself.
A creature killed by a latched-on devouring pillow will have its head dissolved and its brain eaten.
Mimic Shape (Ex): A devouring pillow can use its ooze-like body mimic simple shapes and textures. It is limited to objects without moving parts and of sizes similar to its own. It generally uses this ability to impersonate a fancy and comfortable-looking pillow in order to better entice would-be targets into taking it along. Anyone who examines the devouring pillow can detect the ruse with a successful Spot check opposed by the devouring pillow’s Disguise check.
Skills: *A lure has a +8 racial bonus on Move Silently. Furthermore, it has a +4 racial bonus on Disguise checks.
