Weapons do realistic damage at level 1, almost killing anything in the first hit. But after that, they start becoming less and less realistic. To fix this glaring issue, I present you with this most awesome, you must totally use it, variant rule. As a bonus, it also makes the low damage reduction that barbarians and warlocksCAr obtain become useful. Also, since bigger creatures can soak up more damage, they should not take as much damage from attacks.

Realistic Weapon Damage[edit]

After damage reduction, multiply damage done to a creature by its hit die. For every size greater than medium, divide damage by 2. For every size smaller than medium, multiply by 2.

Thus, a 20th level medium creature that takes 8 damage now takes 160 damage. If that creature was large, it would take 80 damage, and if it was small, it would take 320 damage.
