Does a fine job of making the Type more flexible (non-mandatory Type-based saves) without adding too many abilities that authors would otherwise have to create write-arounds for, given the diversity of the group. Placing dragons in this group and giving them their own subtype (Draconic (3.5e Subtype)) is perfectly acceptable for mechanical reasons (and allows us to have outsider dragons or undead dragons if we really want). Makes me glad we don't have the Beast Type from 3.0 either. Nice to see skill points boosted so these guys can actually do a variety of basic stuff (jump, survival, spot, listen, climb and balance just to name a couple off the top of my head) without having to add a bunch of racial bonuses (which was typically the old solution, and doesn't scale for advancement particularly well).
