While I like the general item, getting a +3 armor bonus that stacks with virtually everything else just from killing a troglodyte is no bueno IMO.

me like and my goblin assasin is gonna get a gnome suit soon.

only thing keeping this from a favor rating in my mind is that in my oppenion it should provide a armor bonus and not a natural armor bonus

Seconded. Dragonhide, for example, is skin-based (as is leather, for that matter), and still gives an armor bonus to AC. --Ghostwheel (talk) 17:06, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Cave Dwellers[edit]

I generally don't like the idea of handing out natural armor in much of any amount to players at lowest levels, as Ghostwheel points out, and inadvertently brings up a rather interesting problem at the same time with the given example as well as in general. Okay, so the situation goes:

  • Kill a troglodyte that's a CR 1 sapient humanoid monster with +6 natural armor. Deal with it's sickening stench and either:
    • Have someone with at least 1 rank in Craft (Taxidermy) capable of making the DC 16 check in one shot or done reliably with enough bodies around that you've got spares in case it gets botched (actually not sure on re-tries on this one, figuring "no" as failure would render the skin unusable, but that's iffy). -or-
    • Go get someone else within 8 hours time that has at least 1 rank in Craft (Taxidermy) and can be coerced to do the barbaric deed and get past the stench. This method will likely cost money for something worth 0 gp.
  • Go on with further plan that involves someone wearing a skin.
  • Roll a 1d4 for duration or use more resources to extend duration.
  • Be gross and get some natural armor while having at least light armor proficiency.
  • Since this counts as light armor, not sure what the deal would be on wearing two suits of armor, even though this one provides a different armor bonus. I presume you probably could, just adding the penalties together. Is that how that works?
  • How long does this take to craft costing 0 gp. Instantly? Craft rules are weird about that sort of thing. It seems necessary to bring this up, because if you're trying to make a valid tactic out of "sneak in, kill and flay guard, do more sneaking", time is an important factor to know here.

I require some clarifications on things. --Ganteka Future (talk) 23:08, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

I am waffling on the armor bonus or not armor bonus, but one thing that was intended was that this was supposed to take up the body slot, so no armor. And I probably should say it doesn't stack with your own natural armor, though you may barkskin (or mage armor) as you see fit. As for time, I'll toss in a number, though for the most part it is "the same time it takes for a quarterstaff; whatever the DM lets you get away with". -- Eiji-kun (talk) 12:00, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
Even if it did take up a body slot, it still stacks with just about everything including bracers of armor and costs virtually nothing while giving a tangible benefit. Why would you even waffle about it? Even the basic hide-based suits give armor bonuses to AC. --Ghostwheel (talk) 13:34, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
